Who stole my basement?

The basement in the GB(i.e the girl’s block) has always been special to different people in different ways.For some its the height of fun,for others its a reminder of their past here and not so nice memories. But for me it has always been a place with the cleanest bathrooms in the block and a perennially dog-free zone.It has admittedly been nothing more and nothing less,until today that is.While the entire block was rejoicing the much awaited opening of the new mess,I was left sweeping ants out of my room.How an anthill came to be near my room in a matter of few hours between lunch and tea is something I am not able to fathom.May be as so many things are, its endemic to the hostels here.They were too many in number to be successfully swept off which meant I had to kill the whole wretched lot of them.Its not a nice thing to do anytime, least of all on a day when you wake up to find that people actually don’t know how to flush toilets.With my safest sanctuary gone and my feet red with ant-bites, me and my room mate some how managed to get rid of the scary looking writhing black patches on the walls,floor,bins and pretty much everywhere.Its after that I realised that the impregnable basement had been broken down.Tomorrrow the new mess shall be opened and with that every girl in the block will use the new path through the basement,indeed the days of peace in solitude seem to have been stolen away…

    must be such a pain for you guys… i mean, your basement was such a nice enclave, i guess, for you all… and now EVERYONE is gonna be walking to the mess through your corridors… shrieking, yelling, singing, and gen hanging around near your rooms and doing all the stuff we do before and after a meal at the mess.
    Maybe you can entertain yourselves doing imitations of all the hangers-on around your corridors.
    good luck!

    ps: you can chalk the areas around your windows and other possible openings with laxman rekha. i’ve found it effective in keeping ants away. only, it needs to be redrawn every couple of days.

    @priya,
    why such an acerbic tone?the new path would mean that we cannot arbitly leave our doors open,mess workers will frequent the place and god forbid may be even shetty!girls late to class will use our bathrooms and ofcourse the dogs would now have the barking matches near the basement for the waste food would be discarded here.i like the basement because it has relativey fewer people in the floor. anychange to that and i possessively resent it!

    nein! i wasn’t being acerbic in the least; sorry if i sounded so.
    just the other day, we were wondering what it’s gonna be like for you people with all of us walking up and down your corridor for close to five hours a day.
    of course, we didnt consider the point of mess workers and barking dogs, though i must say those make the whole thing a lot many times worse.
    but on the whole, i wasnt gloating or poking fun, merely empathizing, or trying to.
    and… even the folks in the right wing ground floor corridor will be affected by all those from the Old Block coming for meals. But i guess it is a lot worse for you guys coz you are so used to the feeling of the basement being impregnable.
